International football arrives in North America with pre-World Cup friendlies
The United States, Canada and Mexico hosted friendly matches during the March international window between top nations as preparation for the FIFA World Cup in the summer.

From the cool temperatures in Canada to the tropical climate in Mexico, several matches were held across North America featuring the host nations and many top nations from around the world like Brazil and France. These friendlies were intended to promote and preview the main event to come in the summer, the FIFA World Cup.

In Atlanta, Georgia, there were scenes of fans building up anticipation just before kickoff. Many gathered at Centennial Park to show their support for the USMNT to take on Belgium.

When the ref signaled for kickoff, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium filled with chants of “USA,” showing fans unwavering support for their national team. While the US lost to Belgium 5-2, the 66,000 in the crowd were just a preview to how the scenes will look in time for the World Cup.

On the same night as the United States, Mexico held its friendly match against Portugal at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Before the match started, a light show was held to display the beauty of the newly remodeled stadium.

With over 80,000 supporters watching, Mexico managed to hold its own against a side that is favored to win the World Cup. High intensity, thrilling tackles and monstrous blocks were displayed as Mexico and Portugal ended the game 0-0.
Canada hosted Iceland and Tunisia at the BMO Field in Toronto, in their friendly matches. Just before the game, the Canadian fans in attendance all sang in unison as their national anthem was echoed around the stadium. While both matches ended in a draw, Canadian fans caught a glimpse of what's to come for the summer.

In Massachusetts, Brazil and France went head-to-head at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. With over 62,000 in attendance, many fans were riled up by the match between the two biggest nations in football. The match ended with France taking the spoils in a 3-1 win, but the atmosphere during the game was enough to give both teams something to take home.

The sunshine state hosted Croatia as they took on Colombia at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. A sea of yellow was seen all around the stadium as the 50,000 in attendance watched Colombia lose to Croatia 2-1.
With the international window coming to an end, players return to their clubs for the return of regular football. Only 70 days await before the World Cup arrives in North America. Although many nations will play more friendlies, for some, the final preparations are on the horizon. The stage is set for the biggest competition in football to be played in the summer.
