From fifth to tenth place, the top half of the table is separated by six points. Liverpool and Chelsea are battling for the fifth position – Liverpool sit fifth with 49 points and Chelsea sit sixth with 48 points – as Brentford and Everton follow closely behind.

The race for Champions League qualification comes as the Premier League ranks first in UEFA’s coefficient ranking, granting a fifth spot for next season’s competition. Not only does this create a narrow contest; a fifth spot allows the chance for more teams to qualify. Aston Villa winning the Europa League and finishing below the top five would grant a sixth spot. The same applies to Liverpool if they win the Champions League. While this remains speculation, the additional spots build more tension in the top half of the table as teams fight to gain qualification.

This season is one of the most competitive seasons of the Premier League era, according to Jacques Foex, a sports analyst for LCP.
“A combination of a tight mid-table, a poor run of form from reigning champions Liverpool, and a strong showing from the promoted teams certainly gives this year a much more dynamic feel, and the uncertainty surrounding European places is very real,” says Foex

Only seven games remain this season. Mid-table teams such as Fulham and Brighton are in pursuit of returning to European competition, while others like Brentford battle to possibly make their debut in next season’s Champions League. As matchday 32 resumes this Saturday, a win for teams like Liverpool, Chelsea and Brentford bolsters their chances of qualifying, while a loss allows the rest to snatch a ticket into next season's Champions League.
