Tottenham will face Sunderland away from home in a crucial match as they sit one point above the relegation zone. A loss for De Zerbi’s side at the Stadium of Light would hinder their chances of staying in the Premier League, dropping them into the relegation zone. With a victory away from home, a win becomes a turning point for Tottenham in their chances of survival.

Tottenham have not won a league match since their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on December 28, 2025. Under former manager Thomas Frank and interim manager Igor Tudor, Tottenham have claimed only five points from a possible 39 in the league. This comes as Tottenham’s poor form since the start of the new year – eight losses, five draws – continues to thwart their survival hopes.

Tottenham’s poor run of form led to Tudor’s departure as interim manager, prompting the club to sign De Zerbi. Brought in from Marseille, De Zerbi was appointed on March 31. His appointment was opposed by many fans online. Women of the Lane, a Tottenham fan group, contacted the club to oppose the appointment. Ali Speechly, co-founder of the group, weighed in on De Zerbi for statements made during his tenure at Marseille. “I don’t want him anywhere near my football club,” said Speechly.

In his first interview as manager, De Zerbi said this would be a “big challenge” for him and that he “looks forward to winning some games.” De Zerbi emphasized his focus on Sunderland. “We have to be focused just on the Sunderland game, I don’t want to speak about the schedule,” said the new manager.

Following the match on Sunday, Tottenham will have only six games remaining to stay in the Premier League and avoid relegation.
